LG Air Conditioner Troubleshooting Guide

Discussed are 11 LG air conditioner problems worth troubleshooting with this simple manual:

1. LG Air Conditioner Not Turning On

If your LG air conditioner is not turning on, it’s important to note the appearance of the indicator light. Here’s what to know:

When the indicator light is OFF

If the indicator light is OFF when you turn on the AC, the issue could be:

  • An unplugged unit – Check the power plug to ensure it is plugged in. if it’s not, plug it in firmly and then turn it on.
  • A tripped breaker – There could have been a power surge that tripped the breaker. So, check it and reset it if that’s the case.
  • A faulty outlet – Try plugging another appliance into the electric outlet. If it doesn’t power up, replace the outlet, as it could be defective.
  • A faulty power plug – Use a multimeter to test the power plug’s continuity. If it lacks continuity, replace it, which could be why the AC won’t start.
  • A blown-up fuse – A power surge can also blow up the fuse and prevent the AC from turning on. Use the multimeter to check its continuity and replace it if it lacks it.

When the indicator light is GREEN

If the AC won’t turn on but indicates a GREEN light, it’s likely because of a trapped safety relay (or reset button) on the power cable. So, check it and reset it before powering the AC.

When the indicator light is RED

The AC may indicate a RED light due to a tripped reset button or a control panel not turning on. So, check the reset button and reset it and press the power button on the control panel if it’s off to turn it on.

2. LG Air Conditioner Not Turning Off

Sometimes the LG AC may turn on but fail to power off. If so, it’s likely due to the following:

  • Dirty condenser coils – Dirty condenser coils may compel the compressor to run nonstop, preventing the AC from turning off. For that reason, inspect the condenser coils for dirtiness and clean them if they are filthy.
  • Faulty thermostat – If the thermostat is malfunctioning, it won’t turn off the compressor, causing it to run nonstop. So, test the thermostat’s continuity and change it if it lacks continuity.
  • Defective relay board – Have an expert check the relay board and replace it if it’s faulty. It could be the reason that the AC won’t turn off.
  • Bad thermistor – A bad thermistor may fail to turn off the compressor causing the AC to run nonstop. Thus, check its continuity and replace it if it lacks continuity.
  • Failed temperature control board – Lastly, consider replacing the temperature control board if none of the other parts is defective.

3. LG Air Conditioner Not Connecting to Wi-Fi

While you expect your LG AC to connect to Wi-Fi seamlessly, sometimes it won’t. That’s likely to be the case due to the:

  • Hidden connection – If your air conditioner cannot locate the router, it won’t connect. So, ensure the router is visible.
  • Long range – The router shouldn’t be too far from the AC. If it is, the AC won’t connect to Wi-Fi.
  • Wrong password – Check the password to ensure it’s the correct one. It could be the reason the air conditioner can’t connect to Wi-Fi.
  • The wrong network – Ensure you connect to the correct home network. If not, your air conditioner won’t connect to Wi-Fi.

4. LG Air Conditioner Not Blowing Air

You want your LG air conditioner to blow air (cold and hot), but some issues may prevent it. They include:

  • Slow fan speed – If the fan is set at a slow pace, it won’t blow enough air. So, check the fan speed and adjust it if it’s a slow speed.
  • Bent fan blade or broken motor – Check the fan blade for bends and the motor for breaks, and replace the fan if you identify the signs.
  • Faulty relay board, thermostat, or control board – A defective relay board, thermostat, or control board could also prevent the fan from blowing air. You’ll need an expert to check them and suggest what you should replace.

5. LG Air Conditioner Not Draining Water

Good drainage is just as important as cooling and heating. So, you should check these issues immediately if your LG Ac won’t drain.

  • Clogged drain line – If the condensate line is dirt clogged, the AC won’t drain and may overflow. If that’s the case, clean the drain line.
  • Clogged base pan – The base pan could accumulate debris which clogs it and prevents draining. So, you’ll need to check and clean it too.
  • Tilted unit – If the unit is poorly installed and happens to be tilting, water won’t drain properly and may leak. In such a case, have an expert re-install the AC.

6. LG Air Conditioner Not Cooling Well

If your LG air conditioner won’t blow cold air and cool your room, it’s most likely due to the following:

  • Restricted airflow (dirty filter coils, or vent or denser barriers) – Check the air filter, condenser coils, and vent for clogging and clean them. Then remove any curtains, furniture, or other obstacles in front of the AC that could prevent it from blowing cold air.
  • Room is too hot (heat source) – Move the AC away from any heat source like a burner or microwave. It could be interfering with the cooling.
  • High-temperature setting – Ensure the thermostat is set at around 600F or on COOL mode. If it’s not, the AC won’t cool.
  • Refrigerant leakage – Check for possible refrigerant leak and have an expert fix it, as it could be the reason the AC won’t cool
  • Undersized AC – The Ac won’t cool if it’s too small for your room size. So, you should check its BTU rating to ensure it matches your space, and below is a table to guide you.
Room Size (Square-Feet)Average Size
Up to 200 Square-Feet7,000 BTU
Up to 250 Square-Feet8,000 BTU
Up to 300 Square-Feet10,000 BTU
Up to 350 Square-Feet11,000 BTU
Up to 400 Square-Feet12,000 BTU
Up to 500 Square-Feet13,000 BTU

7. LG Air Conditioner Not Heating

Several issues could deter your LG AC from heating during the winter. They include the following:

  • Undersized unit – Refer to the earlier table to determine if your AC matches your room size. If not, get a bigger unit.
  • Excessive outdoor cold – If the outside weather is freezing, the AC will freeze. If so, you may need to wait for the temperatures to warm up.
  • Dirty filter – A filthy filter suffocates the AC, preventing it from blocking hot air. You’ll need to clean it if that’s the case.
  • Tripped breaker – A tripped-up breaker cuts off the AC’s power supply, preventing it from getting hot. You’ll need to reset such a breaker to restore the power.
  • Wrong mode – Ensure the AC is set on Heat mode. If it’s not, it won’t heat.

8. LG Air Conditioner Not Responding to Remote Control

If your LG air conditioner doesn’t respond to the remote when you press it, the issue could be any of these:

  • Wrong battery installation – If the batteries are placed wrongly (incorrect polarity), the remote won’t work. So, check them and re-install them correctly.
  • Exhausted batteries – Consider replacing the batteries (if older than 12 months) to see if the remote won’t work.
  • Long range – Ensure you are operating the remote within a 20-feet radius. If that’s not the case, then it could be why the remote isn’t working.
  • Damaged remote sensor – Inspect the remote sensor (the LED bulb at the front). If it’s damaged, replace the remote control as it shows faultiness.
  • Bad control board – The problem could be a faulty AC control board, not the remote. So, have an expert check it and replace it if it’s defective.

9. LG Air Conditioner Control Panel Not Working

The last thing you want is a non-operational or non-responsive control panel, but that can be the case, especially if the unit needs resetting. But how do you reset an LG air conditioner?

The easiest way is to press the power plug’s test/reset/power button. Alternatively, press the reset button on the control panel.

If the control panel doesn’t work after resetting the AC, consider the issues below:

  • Tripped breaker – A tripped breaker may prevent the control panel from working. So, check it and rest if it is so.
  • Faulty buttons – If the control panel buttons are non-responsive, the control panel won’t work. If so, replace the control panel.
  • Faulty control module – If the control module is short-circuited or defective, the control panel won’t work. So, have an expert check it and replace it.
  • Electrical fault – If there’s an electrical fault, the control panel won’t work. Thus, have an expert check and fix your electrical wiring if it has an issue.

10.  LG Air Conditioner Heat Mode Not Working

If the heat mode is not working, it’s most likely because of selecting any of these modes which don’t favor heating:

  • Cool Mode – The Cool Mode only allows the fan to circulate cold air, and the compressor stops running once a specific temperature is reached to prevent heating. If so, you’ll need to deactivate it.
  • Energy-Saver Mode – The energy-saver mode turns off the exhaust fan and circulation fan, preventing the heat mode. Thus deactivate it if it’s on.
  • Fan Mode – The fan mode only allows the AC to blow cold air but doesn’t turn on the compressor, thus no heating. You’ll need to deactivate it if it’s on.
  • Dry Mode – The dryer mode turns the circulation off when a specific temperature is reached and prevents heating. Thus, you’ll also indeed deactivate it too.

11. LG Air Conditioner Compressor Keeps Shutting Off

Lastly, if the AC’s compressor won’t run consistently but keeps stopping, the reason could be:

  • AC is overheating – If the AC overheats, the compressor will shut off. If so, try shutting down the AC. If it continues overheating, have an expert check the refrigerant.
  • Dirty condenser coils – Dirty condenser coils can also prevent the compressor from running. Hence, clean them.
  • Faulty overload, thermostat, temperature control board – If the overload, thermostat, or temperature control board is defective (or burnt), the compressor voltage supply will be disrupted, causing the compressor to turn off.  You’ll need to replace them.
  • Dead compressor – The compressor might shut off because it’s short-circuited or worn out. If so, replace it.
